DESPERATION
1996, Oil on Canvas, 50 x 38 in. (127 x 96.5 cm.)
Taking his lead from Dutch genre painters of the seventeenth century, Conine captured the intensity of this family’s struggle to survive on the streets of Paris. Employing a technique in which color is applied directly to the underpainting, the artist works a full color palette and strong composition to suggest the gap between this needy family and the wealthy lives behind the iron fence.
